A total of 29 presidents have followed Ellis and the Chapter is now an
active, fiscally sound organization of approximately 500 members that strive to
further education in concrete technology and promote the use of concrete
throughout the State of New Jersey. The
membership is composed of contractors, engineers/architects, educators, precast
concrete manufacturers, ready mixed concrete suppliers, cement manufacturers,
aggregate producers, concrete admixture suppliers, students and material
suppliers and manufacturers of concrete related products. There are twelve
Fellows and one ACI-International Honorary Member. The chapter has a roster
of active members serve as committee chairmen.
An executive branch composed of the President, Vice-President,
Treasurer, Past-President and a Board of Directors governs the Chapter. A salaried Executive Director administers
daily planning and activities.
The Chapter holds at least four dinner meetings each year
featuring topics of interest presented by experts in the concrete
industry. Other activities include
ACI-International sponsored seminars, field trips, NJACI sponsored seminars and
the following certification courses -
Concrete Field Testing Technician, Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician-Grade
I and Grade II, Concrete Strength Testing Technician, and Concrete Flatwork
Finisher/Technician.
The New Jersey Chapter has developed and implemented a
Concrete Construction Technology Course.
The course is designed to provide the engineer, inspector, concrete
contractor and concrete producer with the necessary concrete technology
knowledge that appropriate and rational decisions can be made in the field when
addressing the batching, handling, placement, finishing and curing of Portland
Cement Concrete. In addition, it
provides, upon successful completion of the course and exam, certification by
the New Jersey Chapter that the candidate understands the basics in concrete
technology and meets the certification requirements of the NJ Department of
Transportation and the Port Authority of NY & NJ.
The College of Engineering, Rutgers University serves as the
home of the Chapter Library. Over 200
publications are in the care of the Chapter “Librarian”, Dr. P. Balaguru. A college scholarship program, initiated in
2001, awards $6,000.00 to children of NJACI members. A yearly college student competition challenges students from New
Jersey Colleges and Universities to incorporate concrete technology into real
world practice. Monetary rewards are
distributed to the College ASCE chapters for the top performing teams, but
bragging rights appear to be the driving force to succeed.
Each May the Chapter co-sponsors with the New Jersey
Concrete and Aggregate Association the Annual NJ Concrete Awards Dinner,
attended by more than 700 people, which honors outstanding concrete
construction projects in the State of New Jersey. At this award, the Grand Award winning team is presented with a
concrete statuette – the Rocky. A video
presentation addressing the Grand and Merit Award winning projects highlights
this affair, launched in 1964.
Attendance includes elected officials and the Chief Engineers and
Executive Directors of State Authorities.
On the lighter side, there is an annual golf outing each
June that offers members and their guests a wonderful day of golf and
socializing.
The Chapter is proud that it has earned excellent or
outstanding status since the program was initiated by ACI-International in
1988. It is equally proud that it will
co-host, with the Concrete Industry Board, Inc. of New York, the 2005 Spring ACI
Convention.
